Miss Evie Rose is a bit of a monkey. Whatever Jamie does - she must do as well. Don't worry. She's quite skilled and had no issues climbing back down. All the animals are happy as can be today. The weather let up and we're in the 70's today! Such a relief. I love fall so much and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. Until then - I have babies who want to spend allllllllll their time outside which is okay by me. There's nowhere else I'd rather be...

Just keep knitting! Just keep knitting! What do we do? WE KNIT!

Yeah - I'm totally channeling Dory from Finding Nemo. I keep knitting and I don't seem to get closer to the sleeve part of this sweater. I think I like top-down sweaters better.
What bump?

The bump in the baby growing area?
Y'all caught me.
We're expecting our third child sometime in April 2014. :) Crazy that I'm already showing...

I still need to steam the leaf placket into shape, but I'm ridiculously proud of this little cardigan! I had psyched myself out of knitting anything harder than a hat for way too long. I loved knitting this little sweater for Evie Rose. It'll come in handy in the fall/winter. Notes on this are here.

When I finished - Jamie asked me very sweetly if I was going to make him a sweater. The only way to respond to such a request is to cast on one for him.

I haven't gotten far with it. It's bottom up this time instead of Evie's which was top down. It's such a pretty deep green. I need to start messing with my photographs. Any editing tips are appreciated. I cannot ever show the actual colors of my yarn. I stink at photography though, so it may just be that, haha!

Right now - I have been thoroughly enjoying reading Anne of Avonlea by Lucy Maud Montgomery and Introduction to the Devout Life by Saint Francis de Sales. I'm also working my way through Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.

And now - for something completely different:

Evie Rose. This child doesn't sleep, y'all.

Ever.

Okay - she sleeps, but only in small spurts.

I know she is starting to cut some molars, and I am aware that I was totally spoiled by Jamie's awesome sleeping skills. She had just started sleeping in a bed with Jamie (a big, queen size bed in our room...Yes, we have two in there,) and now all of a sudden she's up a million times a night. She's 18 months old. I'm wondering if it's too early to try night weaning or if it would be madness to even attempt such a thing. She's okay during the day, naps well on her own in their bed...but night time - from midnight to 3:30am she's up about every 15-30 minutes. Every night this week. I have tried teething tablets and even motrin.

Nope.

Still up.

She's never had a problem with anything I've ate or she's ate from what I can tell. I had to cut a ton out with my son when he was super little, but never had to cut anything from my diet with her. What do y'all think? Phase? Teething? I'm not wanting to wean her entirely...I'd even be okay with once a night if she still wanted to do that...but 8-15 times a night? I feel like that's a lot for someone her age...

Again - Let me know what y'all think. I appreciate the opinions. ***
Clotheslines aren't photogenic.

We've had some serious storms pass through this weekend. Thursday - we had a pretty scary 15 minutes. My brother-in-law, M, showed up just in time for the storm to start getting serious. M was playing dragons with Jamie in the playroom when the sky opened up on us. Rain was going in four different directions, shutters started flying off, a chair and table from the front porch decided to take off for green meadows, and the trees. Well - the trees didn't do so hot, y'all. We went down to the basement for a few minutes to wait it out. This house has too many windows for me to feel comfy cozy about chillin' upstairs while the wind was freaking out...

This is merely a sample. We lost eight trees total, including a beautiful old oak in the back of the middle pasture. It fell on the goon squads' (the boars') pen. Luckily - all are accounted for. I heard something about cattle and lightening not being friends. Not sure on that since ours are, thankfully, still alive. M got Napoleon in his shed before this all went down.

Speaking of Napoleon:

He's free! He's staying in his pasture...for now. Napoleon doesn't like women, but seems to like The Celt, M, and Jamie. Jamie walked right up and pet his nose today. He still won't let me close enough to even try that.

In other news - Evie is a teething mess of a toddler. It hasn't stopped her from her monkey antics though:

What do you mean phones are not for playing with? She totally doesn't care that Mommy doesn't want her climbing on things. Case and point:

Note the smirk and body language. This was after the, "Evie Rose! Get down from there!" She cares not.

And just because he's cute:
Jamie's been super helpful lately. I love that. Sweet boy.

Whew - I think this wraps up my random update for today. I'll (hopefully) be back tomorrow for the Yarn Along.

Miniature horse? Sure - why not?!?! His name is Napoleon. He walked through our barbed wire fence on his first day here. That was a 3 hour adventure I'd like to forget. He had a couple tiny scratches, but other than that he seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself. We're having to rethink our enclosure.

My sweet children hamming it up for the camera. Goobers.

I realized you haven't met Boris and Natasha. Our newest farm cats. Boris is the orange tabby. He's very much a snuggle kitty. He wants on my lap anytime I am sitting outside. Natasha loves being pet, but doesn't sit still for long. Generally - she can be found leaping out of trees attempting to scare the chickens. Both kittens are amazingly tolerant of the children. Evie seems to think carrying them by the neck is the super awesome way to carry cats. "No neck pick ups! Only by the belly," are phrases frequently heard around here. Sombra is less than amused by our new farm cats, but is coming to terms with their arrival. He just makes sure he's getting "cuddles and sweet pat pats" as Jamie and Evie say. Personally - I'll watch Cat-o'-vision over television any day of the week. What is it about kittens playing that is so hilarious?!?! Perhaps it's just me...
Second twenty-ninth birthday?

Eh. I'll pass, y'all.

I'd rather own my thirty years.

At thirty years old - I am the healthiest I have ever been in my life. I am the happiest I've ever been in my life. We've realized a dream by purchasing our own farm. We have two beautiful children who light up my days. After housework - I get to spend my days playing with our children, knitting, sewing, swinging on the porch swing, and chasing chickens off our (gated!) back deck. Evil chickens who want to leave their poop right where I want to walk.

I'm blessed beyond words. I wouldn't re-live the first part of my twenties for anything on this planet. The second half brought good things though: meeting my husband, the return of my health, marrying the man of my dreams, motherhood, the purchase of our farm...The second half definitely trumps the first.

I'm still plugging away at my sweater for Miss Evie Rose. It's coming along great! I really adore this pattern. Not too hard, but enough interest to keep me knitting.

5 AM.

A cup of tea (or coffee which sadly we were out of *gasp*).

The baby monitor to hear the children if they wake.

Saying the rosary while watching the sun rise.

Petting an old companion.

Small, beautiful tea roses.

Pretty perfect if you ask me...

It's been awhile. We had quite a month! The kids got wicked colds that resulted in croupe for Jamie. He did well with it though this go around. Then I got a vicious case of mastitis which also brought along the discovery of a penicillin allergy. The weekend I finally recovered from both the mastitis and the intense hives - the kids we're hit by spring cold number two! Whew. When it rains it pours, y'all.

Thankfully - we're all doing great now. I've implemented a schedule of sorts to my housekeeping duties and that is allowing me so much more freedom for crafting! I've been taking in some skirts that no longer fit me. I also deconstructed some old t-shirts to make into play skirts/dresses for Miss Evie and lounge shorts for Jamie.

Now would be the time to get cracking on those fall sweaters as well. Since I can't seem to go a couple days (TOPS!) without knitting - I have also started my very first cardigan for little Evie Rose. Next will be Jamie's. If I get real ambitious or I just fall in love with sweater making, I'll make myself one and The Celt one as well. However - I fear my ambition is lofty!

I am working on the Cascade sweater for Evie Rose. I'm barely into it seeing as I started it last night. I had so much fun with the first ten rows though!

Can we note that she is wearing a sweater...in June...in Tennessee?!?! Seriously. Not complaining at all! GORGEOUS weather the past couple of days!

Lately - I've been tearing through books as if they were water. I've read everything from homesteading books, to fiction, to a children's classic, and a book on how to make a Catholic home. The links take you to one book per category, but I've read a few in each of those categories lately. Evie Rose was taking naps on her own in the bed, but she has changed the last two weeks and will not let me lay her down for her naps. So I hold her and read. These days will pass too quickly after all.
Spring is here, y'all. I'm loving every brief moment I have of it. Already the weather is starting its upward climb. Sure - it'll get knocked back down several times yet, however the climb reminds me that spring is limited for us south of the Mason-Dixon. Soon, rather than later, the temps will soar right past pleasant finding themselves parked somewhere between sweltering and hell. Right now - I'm enjoying kicking back with the windows open. I'm letting the sounds of birds and bees lull me into a blissful state of reverie.

I'm lucky if I get to touch my computer on the weekends.

So - We have the Wednesday Garden Journal.

In one of the spare rooms in our house, we've set up a seed nursery of sorts. Jamie loves helping Daddy water "his" plants.

Evie Rose likes watering too, but mainly she likes to dig out the dirt. Thus why she's standing at the door now instead of standing near the poor baby plants...

The Celt and I weeded, tilled, and planted a bit this past weekend.

Note to self: wear sunscreen next time. My skin still matches my hair. Ouch.

Completely worth it though. I love getting my hands dirty!

Admittedly not livestock. Not even a good mouser. Mice are beneath him. He is old and cantankerous. Almost every photo I take of him looks similar to this. Demon cat.
After all that work on Saturday - We kicked back and watched the sunset from our deck.

Have I mentioned how much I love this farm? This is living. We are so very blessed.

Not the huge sand pit. This one is located only a few precious feet from our back door. Lovely.

Evil, Evil sand.

Originally - upon purchase of this beautiful house - I thought, "Wow - there is a lot of sand for the babies to play in! That will be such fun!" I'm sure it is for them since they rarely play anywhere else now that the pool has been removed. All that remains is a huge circular pit of sand.

Evil, Evil sand pit of extra housework for me.

I sweep 90 some odd times a day at this point. The babies play in it non-stop filling their shoes and hair with tons of sand. Trying to eat it - Sweet Miss Evie still thinks maybe one time it will taste amazing. She's still disappointed. Putting water in it so it attaches to them like an evil paste of doom bent on spreading itself in every.single.corner of my beautiful house. Don't even get me started on the fact that every cat and cat-like creature in a 100 mile radius of our home just had their handy dandy litter box beacon go off. The level of ew there is indescribable my friends.

Sand has moved from the "Oh what fun!" category and been firmly placed in the "Invented by the devil" category.

If you ever buy a house in which the former owner liked the beach so very much that she actually tried to bring it to her backyard - make sure you either do not have toddlers, love sweeping with a fiery passion, or remove aforementioned evil, evil sand before your toddlers really know what is going on.

When it warms up a bit more - hosing down will be necessary before the toddlers are permitted inside.

Kidding...

I think.

Soon - the evil sand pit of doom will be mixed with soil for the planting of some various sandy soil crops. We'll make the kiddos their own sand box complete with a super duper high tech cover (not really) to keep out any feline wishing to use the potty in it.

Problem solved.

Winter - quit being such a diva! It's time to pass the crown to Spring, my friend. Your time to shine (or snow) will come again. Trust me. For now - I need more cute pictures like the above hand holding business.
Well - yes, they say it a lot. However - that is not who is the most guilty of saying that phrase. I am. The Russian.

**I'm actually shocked The Celt didn't decide to call me Blondie or Ruskie, two of his favorite pet names he has for me. I'll take The Russian and run with it.**

See - I say that more than the toddlers. "I can do it myself! I got this! I can handle every single thing that comes at me on my own! I don't need help! Help is weakness!!"

But all of that is wrong, wrong, wrong.

I do need help. Lots and lots of it. Not from The Celt. I need help from God. I need prayers from the Saints and Our Blessed Mother, Mary. I need to pause and pray that they will help me through my frustrations...through my anger...through my selfishness.

How many times I have thought, "Good grief, I got this, just leave me ALONE for a minute."

Whoa. Hold that scary train on back, momma. With that sentence I just illustrated that I have nothing.

Evie Rose is a very "high needs" child. She wants to be held, cuddled, and snuggled 24/7. Even when I have to use the restroom - she wants to come with me. She wails at the gate while I rush to switch laundry about. She loses her mind if I walk out of her sight for even a moment. I am not and have never been that way. I am more independent & more of a loner by nature. Jamie is the same way. If no one wants to play with him, who cares?! He's totally cool off playing on his own. He was and is my "easy" child. I don't like labels. Evie's easy in her own ways as well. She is just very demanding. But you see - I need her too...

She's teaching me to let go of things that don't really matter (the stuff.) She's teaching me to let go of my sinful pride. She's teaching me to pray more when I am frustrated, angry, or want those selfish minutes to myself. There will come a time when she won't need me any more. You can bet I will miss her snuggles. For now - I need to let the rest go. I need to rock, snuggle, and spend time with my little girl. She's teaching me patience and compassion.

Who knew such lofty lessons could be learned from someone so little...
We had some gorgeous snow this weekend. Oh - it was lovely! Alas - we couldn't really get out to enjoy the cold stuff. The babies and I were all bedded down with a wicked cold. The Celt now has it and is fighting his way through it to go in to his day job for The Man. Bless him. I don't think I could do it. Don't let Evie's smile fool you. That is her knee-jerk reaction to cameras now. She was a pretty miserable monkey this weekend.

It's one of those little quirks you notice about yourself after you start farming (or for that matter, doing any form of honest work). Or at least, when you're a pretentious southerner to whom everything (no matter how insignificant) is an art to be perfected, everybody else's work is fair game for vicious, merciless criticism. How else would you feel good about your own shoddy work? Every farm I see, I find myself examining the quality of the corner posts, number of strands of barbed wire, spacing of t-posts, etc - and much to the exasperation of The Russian (judging by her attempts to garrote me with a spare shawl), criticizing all of it in extreme detail.

There are a lot of different techniques to building a good fence. Some work better than others, and of course it all depends on what kind of fence you're running, what kind of animal you're keeping, what kind of soil you have, and (most important in my case) your aversion to anything resembling work. What surprises me is how many really poor fences there are out there (among them, of course, plenty of mine - especially the first ones). Here's my method - it has worked pretty well on the few thousand rods of fence we've run so far. All methods are subject to change of course, especially after a passing dragonfly decides to take a breather on a t-post and brings down a few hundred hards of the perimeter.

Barbed wire is all we really need for cattle. (Hogs take a little more work; more on that in a minute). That makes it a little easier than running straight field fence; we've had pretty good results from sinking 6-8 inch posts in 36 inches of concrete (TN clay makes any other setting unacceptable in my opinion), t-posts 12-15 feet apart, and 4 strands of wire. Anything more than 4 strands of wire (the old-timers will tell you always run 5; that way if one breaks you're covered - but I'm lazy and cheap), and you should be doubling up your corner posts at least. Unless we can't get a post at least 36 inches down, we've had pretty good luck with just a single corner post and a brace. I wouldn't trust those fences to something that likes to pound or push on them, though (like a bull - but then, 2000 pounds of pissed-off meat moving at 35 mph can go through pretty much anything it wants to go through - that's kind of like driving your truck into the fence).

For hogs, the same method above works, but you can get away with 3 strands of barbed wire - hogs don't jump fences. We run 4 strands regardless; you never know what else you might need to keep in that paddock. Then, run 2 strands of electric wire on the inside of the posts - the first one about 4 inches off the ground, the second about 8 inches. Power it with the biggest, baddest electric charger you can find (get a buddy to test it of course - just make sure you get a good head start on him since once he's regained consciousness and changed his underwear he'll no doubt want to introduce your face to the nearest hammer). Hogs will touch that fence all of about once, and they'll never (deliberately) touch it again. In fact, we've used just 2 strands of electric fence to separate different hogs in a single paddock before (no barbed wire). Once the hogs figure out where it is, they won't cross that line without a lot of encouragement, even after you remove the wire. Our sow has been around long enough to know what electric fence looks like, so she won't touch it at all on purpose - we could technically just string it and never power it up, and she probably wouldn't ever test it.

We're about to expand into goats, sheep, and (Lord bless us) a stud bull. I think the goats (2 or 3 of them at most) will just stay in a small 60x40 paddock with a fence about 3 miles high and charged up with an old surplus prison electric chair. The old-timers say if your fence won't hold water, it won't hold a goat. In all seriousness, the goats may be short-lived. If they get out and chew something I or The Russian put any value in, they're roast mutton.

I've heard sheep will be ok with the barbed wire. Stacked stone fences with about 250 years' worth of lichen and moss growth on them would be great, but ain't happening in this part of the country (or with a farmer this lazy).

The bull, for now, gets locked in a stall made of adamantine and cryptonite, and equipped with tractor beams, laser-tripped .50-caliber sentry guns, and Patriot missiles. We'll buy him young and treat him right, so he shouldn't be too crazy (though to steal a line of a comedian/farmer whose name I can't remember - as every woman knows, every male species on the planet is bat-**** crazy until castrated).

So that's how we're building our fences. So far it has worked pretty well for us, and apparently the other farmers in the neighborhood think so too - at least, judging by the way they're always gesturing at my fences and talking to their wives, who are calmly trying to garrote them with a spare shawl.

Y'all - I sucked it up and took both toddlers to mass today. Evie's already taken her ashes off of her forehead, but Jamie still has his. He's calling it his special dirt. Ashes...dirt...same thing to a little boy.

Good thing you can't see his lack of pants. I think he's giving them up for lent...

Or not.

There is no way I want him running around pantless all the time. For real.

Check out this post from Fr. Longenecker explaining the reason behind the ashes on the forehead.

Though Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation - I refused to miss it on account of possibly maybe having a rough time with both kiddos alone. They were so well behaved! After mass, I looked at my little children and thought, "What kind of aliens inhabited your little bodies today?! Nevermind. I'll keep 'em." In all seriousness - I am so blessed to be their mother and to have this opportunity to teach them a little bit about our faith.
A list that still has me working (on the final) present.

Yeah. You don't have to tell me. I took on too much.

Alas - here is the final, half (okay, okay quarter...) finished product!

I really love this pattern. It's a very interesting and not too hard pattern.

I cannot wait to see this finished and blocked. At this point though - I feel I'll never actually finish. I've hit a block in which I feel no matter how much I knit I am getting no where with it. In the words of Dory, "Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming." Or knitting. Swimming probably won't help much ;)

I fail time and time again in my prayer life. Some days would pass and I would realize I had not even prayed at all. Some days I had prayed nothing more than a Hail Mary in an effort to calm my lack of patience or my temper.

Quite frankly, I missed my quiet prayer time in the morning. I know I wrote previously about my time in the mornings. 5 am. Well - things changed. My ability to leave the bed that early was interrupted by my dear little girl. Evie Rose senses when I move from the bed. She's like a cat, y'all. Nothing gets past that kid!

It just took some time for me to carve out a little quiet time again! It appears she drops into a fairly deep sleep right about 6am or 6:30am. Thus why you find me up this morning. I've already said my morning prayers. Lately - I have been enjoying finding the time to say a Daily Offering to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as well as finding time for the Angelus (typically said 3 times a day around 6am, Noon, and 6pm).

Those are all really great times for me to pray! The children are asleep in the mornings. Evie Rose takes her nap about Noon. Come 6pm - the children are generally playing some game together so taking a quick moment for the Angelus isn't that hard for me. I think I needed to remember that the world would not end, the house would not fall apart, nothing will be thrown off by me stopping a few moments to pray. I sometimes get so involved with things getting done or a schedule that I push more important things aside. I hyper focus on menial tasks. I need to remember the story of Martha and Mary.

I have also started saying the Guardian Angel prayer with the kids every morning and we will say an Our Father and a Hail Mary together during the day. My husband and I really enjoy saying a family rosary in the evenings after supper. Since my consecration to the Blessed Mother - I will also be adding the Little Crown of the Blessed Virgin to my Noon prayers.

What do you and your families do for your daily prayers? Do you have a favorite prayer book? Do you have a special time to prayer during the day? Let me know in the comments below!
This just so happens to be the time of year I start yearning for Spring. I am making garden plans, purchasing seeds, thinking about organization more, and trying desperately to be patient. All things in good time and all.

That said - I have had breakthroughs concerning my faith this past week. It all culminated last night. What does this mean for you? Well - you'll be hearing a lot more about my faith on this blog. I will be posting about the activities I put together in order to teach my children, the special meals I make to celebrate certain feast days, and revelations I make concerning Catholicism. I wish I could say more about the breakthrough, but I have not the words - just feelings. Feelings so strong I wish I could share them with you, but I fear I lack the eloquence needed to do them justice. It all started when I read this, and I urge you to read it as well. Nothing I have ever read in my entire life has affected me like that book.

I have been thinking on what I will do for Lent. One of the things I am thinking about is that I will try to take the children to morning Mass once a week.

Confession time: I've never gone anywhere alone with the kids.

I know. I know. All of your eyes just bugged out of your head, right?

I'm so worried that Jamie will run off or that they both will have epic meltdowns while I am alone with them. It's time I stop worrying about such things. So what if the meltdown thing happens? It's probably happened to every mother out there! I just need to suck it up and deal with it. Jamie is pretty good about not running off. I will just have to watch him closely. I have carriers for Miss Evie. I think we're good. Plus - I need to be getting arts and craft supplies and The Celt's time is limited. It's about to get more limited due to work that needs to be done on this farm. It is time I woman up and just do it.Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01318662244557921444noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7697761374825025396.post-52351917296066726112013-02-08T15:47:00.002-06:002013-02-08T15:49:27.666-06:00FourteenLittle teeny tiny PIGLETS!
